EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, sometimes known as ‘tapping’. It is a gentle approach that combines talking about something you would like support with and lightly tapping on particular points on the face and upper body.

EFT can be used to explore thoughts, feelings or experiences that may be causing stress, worry or emotional discomfort. The tapping can provide another way of working with these feelings, alongside talking, rather than having to rely on talking alone.

What can EFT be used for?

EFT may be helpful when you are experiencing things such as:

  • stress or feeling overwhelmed
  • anxiety, worry or fear
  • difficult or uncomfortable emotions
  • low confidence or self-esteem
  • limiting or unhelpful beliefs about yourself
  • feeling stuck or finding it difficult to move forward
  • experiences that continue to cause emotional upset.

It can also be used simply to develop greater calm and manage difficult feelings.

What happens in a session?

We will start by talking about what has brought you to counselling and what you would like help with. If EFT feels like something that could be useful, I will explain it and show you how it works before we begin.

You may be invited to think about a particular thought, feeling, situation or physical sensation while gently tapping on a series of points. I will guide you through this and check in with you as we go.

You do not have to talk about anything you are not ready to discuss. You can pause, stop or change what we are doing at any time.

People experience EFT in different ways. Some people notice a change quite quickly, while for others it may take longer. There is no particular result that can be promised.
